The new Arcade Mode in Overwatch has been a big hit since debuting at BlizzCon and making its PTR debut yesterday.
While fans have been ravenous to try out Sombra, the sleeper hit has been these new modes, and especially the 1v1 Mystery Match, and 3v3 elimination modes. These have been so successful that players are wanting to set up their own matches with friends to prove they reign supreme, and Blizzard is working to implement them into Custom Games.
With this announcement, some interesting possibilities for esports open up. Consider that Quake tournaments were originally run in 1v1 deathmatches or duels, and you'll instantly see the possibilities that open up for show matches.
"We had a ton of fun making it. Obviously, the core of Overwatch is team based," Jeff Kaplan said. "But the 1v1 really offers a different way of playing."
Not only that but the addition of 3v3 Elimination is more akin to a MOBA than anything else - and offers another format that third party esports leagues might try to run for a different take on the game. Not only that, but both of these modes coming to the game will offer a fresh way to play, and allow you to play pickup games with smaller groups much easier.
With the rest of the arcade also coming to custom games, that means that the Brawl playlist will also become available - and let your friends play whatever brawl you want. Things are about to get a whole lot more flexible in the game. Keep in mind that Kaplan also said at the BlizzCon QnA that if enough people wanted to see these modes come to competitive, Blizzard would consider implementing it.
